A Truly Community Event by Joan Borho

The perfect weather on Friday, December 1, saw a “larger than ever” crowd gather for the Formosa Nativity Scene Christmas Celebration. There was activity for all ages.

Father Christmas assisted by his helper Lion Shirley Kuntz handed out to the children the gifts sponsored by the Formosa Lions. The children could decorate a Formosa Catholic Women’s League cookie or have their face painted by Formosa Lioness sponsored face painter Rick Gowing of Mildmay. Hot dogs were cooked up by St. Joseph Aid Society President Don Schaefer and his wife Charlene.

Shawday Autobody and Sand Blasting (Dave and Shawna Kennie) brought their exotic animals which were a big hit in the petting zoo. The also sponsored the blacksmith demonstration by Dave Kuntz of Walkerton, the Niesen Paint Ball Target Practice range, and Scott’s wagon rides past the Nativity Scene. One could warm themselves around one of the bonfires while roasting sweet bannock or wander over to the bonfire with the tripod and big black kettle where sipping hot apple cider was a popular activity. The colouring contest was won by Paige Weiler.

The sweet sounds of The Happy Valley Gang (Rob & Sharon Borho & Carl Zettel) providing music and song was much enjoyed and appreciated. Chloemeadow Farms (Jim and Marianne Batte) were on the job from organizing the set up of the Nativity Scene to making the community aware of the celebration to manning the toffee pull. John Butts entertained of Formosa entertained with his magic tricks.

Formosa Librarian Lisa Davidson was on hand with a selection of interesting books and a reminder of the Christmas Ceramic Painting to take place at the Recreation Complex Library on Dec. 16 and Dec. 17 from 12.30 pm until 3 pm., inviting kids from 4 – 14 years of age at no cost to join in. Paul Kuntz Decorating and Chloemeadow Farms decorations had the Pavilion Park beautifully decorated with lights, Christmas tree and wreaths, and the walkway/wagon route to the Nativity Scene was lined with light to show the way.

Thank you and Merry Christmas to everyone who came out for a fun filled, event filled evening, to the Formosa organization and businesses, and to the many many Formosa volunteers who assisted in making this just a perfect evening.
