Cats are carnivores, that is, the cat is an animal that feeds on meat. Your cat needs animal protein to be healthy. We explain to you why cats need meat.
Who feeds on meat?
Animals can be carnivorous or herbivorous, that is, feed substantially on meat or plants. Then there are also omnivores who eat both: humans, bears and pigs for example. Since both dogs and cats are actually carnivores, many people mistakenly think that these animals can follow the same diet. Although it is true that dogs may follow a plant-based diet, and sometimes they may even be allergic to animal protein, it is not so for cats. Cats are strictly carnivorous, which means they always need meat.
The cat has some characteristics that are typical of carnivores: the eyes facing forward, in order to locate the prey well, the body built to hunt and the canine and premolar teeth to catch and kill the prey.
Why can’t cats do without meat?
It’s a good question, why can’t cats do without meat, while dogs could also follow a meatless diet? It is due to their higher protein requirements and the need for amino acids, which are distributed more quickly in the body of cats. Taurine is an important amino acid for the cat and is mainly contained in foods of animal origin with a high protein value, such as meat, fish, crustaceans, poultry, brewer’s yeast, eggs and dairy products. Dogs are able to produce taurine in their body, while cats are forced to eat it through their diet. A taurine deficiency can have serious consequences in cats, such as blindness and heart failure. Vitamins A and B12, always present in products of animal origin, are also important for the cat. Here too, dogs produce these vitamins in their body, but cats hardly or hardly. Some people suggest giving cats food supplements to provide for their need for vitamins, but it’s not a good idea. With supplements, the cat is likely to take too many vitamins, which could be harmful.
Vegetarian cat food
There are some brands that offer vegetarian cat food. These feeds contain all the right nutrients the cat needs, including taurine and added vitamins. Some cats react well to this type of diet, but the scientific basis for claiming that vegetarian food could be a healthy alternative for cats even in the long term is lacking. That’s why we offer vega dog food in the Yarrah range, but not yet for cats. However, further research is ongoing, as the number of cats that are served vegetarian or vegan food every day is increasing, and many of these cats are checked annually (very important) and are healthy.
What food to give to your cat?
It is important to choose the right food for your cat based on the age of the pet. At each stage of life, the cat has different nutritional needs. Therefore, it is important to align the food administered to the right phase. For example, the kitten drinks breast milk in the first weeks of life and then gradually switches to solid food. Kittens need a lot of protein and fat. Yarrah Grain-Free has a high percentage of protein and fat, ideal for growing kittens. For adult cats, however, different types of food are available. Discover the range of cats food to know our various alternatives. Older cats don’t necessarily need a specific type of food; however, it is important to keep an eye on their needs. For example, older cats are often more lazy and have a slower metabolism. They also suffer from dental problems more easily. It may be better for them to eat wet food, which is softer to chew than croquettes.
